My/Our Holiday Opinion:
The resort was lovely and the location of the hotel was great with a beach just across the road and a short and cheap bus ride into the resort centre.
The accomodation was ok, for what we paid for it we were happy, although I wouldnt be too pleased had we paid a lot for the holiday. The towels smelt, despite asking for them to be changed several times and being given more smelly towels, we eventually bought our own ones. Sheets were a bit dirty as well. The room was big with 2 double beds for 2 of us and the bathroom big as well. Pool was nice but dirty most of the time, which was why we spent most of our time on the beach. We ate in the hotel restaurant a few times, the food was not nice, so we tended to eat just toast for breakfast or go out as there are many excellent restaurants in Cancun. Hotel staff were mostly friendly and willing to help. Speaking to other people their rooms were not as nice, cock roaches etc.
Would probably not go back to this hotel again but really enjoyed Cancun.
We went on the jungle tour and swimming with dolphins. Booked the trips in the town which worked out cheaper than the price asked for by reps for the same trip.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
Having decided to treat ourselves to first class flights we arrived in Mexico feeling relaxed. Well worth £199 each extra.
The trip to the hotel from the airport was uneventful and quite organised.
Out hotel was as we expected from reports from other friends that had already been before and had come again on this trip. Very luxurious. We had a very large, clean room overlooking the lovely pool area.
We had come looking for luxury and relaxation and certainly found it here.
THe food was of a high standard and we were told that the drinking water was fine to clean your teeth but we made good use of the 'all inclusive' to get water whenever we could as it was very hot. The only thing i could say was don't expect the food to be too english as they are very much still catering towards Americans and serve most things 'mexican style' but still thoroughly enjoyable.
The entertainment side of the hotel is still a bit hit and miss as there were also delgates from a large convention at the hotel staying as well and they commendeered the use of the rooms available for entertainment which was a shame as we had been told that this was quite a good evening. Also the dining room for breakfast became extremely busy because of the delegates (who were given preference over the other guests because of their timetables -which as quite unfair)
The saxaphonist in the evenings in the bar became a bit boring after a while. There was very little else to do if you did not go into town at night.
THe only downside of our holiday was the weather which was unusually wet (but certainly not cold 40+c)and we had a small moonsoon towards the end of the 2nd week which was quite extreme for us 'Brits' as trees fell down and rain poured in through the frame of the patio doors (due to very poor design)which did spoil it slightly as the staff could not keep up with having to mop up all the excess water in the bedrooms concerned. But they did supply plenty of towels to soak it up at least. But out of 14 days only approx 3-4 were actually too wet to go out.
The trips were very well organised. We did the dolphin swim over on the island of women which we thought was the best value and the visit to Chichen-Niza ruins (very very hot but brilliant- but it does take nearly 3 hours on a coach to get there from Cancun)
THe town of Cancun is very busy but great fun, especially at night with lots going on and the bus ride is really cheap only 6 peso each - 35p wherever you get on or off. Very good value and there are hundreds of them every five minutes. The markets are a bit all the same but worth a look around, you have to haggle then walk away of you dont get them to agree a price- they soon change their minds.
All in all we had a very enjoyable time and very relaxing. Would definatley go again.

Firstly be prepared for a wait in the arrivals hall for Passport and Visa control, remember that the cases will be ready for you when you are finished and you always wait for the stragglers on the coach when you get out anyway. The Aquamarina way a wonderful little hotel with friendly staff, spend at least one day in the swim up bar trying all of the cocktails (Try a Rainbow MMMMMM)
The local busses are Excellent didnt have to wait longer than 30 second all of the holiday, one even stopped in the middle of the road to allow us to cross and get on UK buss drivers take note!
Good Americanised shopping malls and wonderful beach side bars in the main beach areas.
All services in the country was Excellent, food in the hotel was brilliant, choices were brill and freshly cooked items were well worth trying. The Americans were noisy but its their Spain, and when asked did apologise and were extremely good company. Dolphin swim was amazing, book down on the beach and get it cheaper, Chichen-itza is fantastic, but its a long day and HOT HOT HOT take plenty of water for the walk round and do cover well with sun lotion. The speed boats and snorkeling was an experiance not to be missed, (It was good to try snorkeling in shallower water first and then progress into deeper when confident.
All in all the hotel and general area is well worth a visit, Put up with the long flight and see sights that cannot be found in Europe.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
We have just come back from 2 weeks at the Aquamarina Hotel, We upgraded to the Mytravel Prem gold seat for the flight which i can recommend as 10 hours is a long flight and the bigger seats and extra leg room are well worth it!! arriving at mexico is like arriving on a different planet we got off the plane and had to wander through the departures lounge to get to immigration which has long queues but once you get through the cases will be there waiting! I must say there was quite a scary moment when we were looking for the rep and an airport worker ran up to us and said airtours follow me and grabbed our bags it was hard to keep up with him and our bags but give him his due he took us to the rep booked us in and then took us to the waiting bus!!
On first glance to hotel wasnt the best looking on the strip but once inside it is nice and cool and had just undergone a refurbishment to the lobby! The room was big with 2 double beds and a kitchen even though we were all inclusive! the balcony had a good view of out to sea although we didnt get the beach view as requested! The rooms look like they could do with a bit of updating but as we were leaving they were all having new curtains put in. After reading some of the reviews on here about the food we were quite worried but bar the 1st night the food was good there was always something i liked and i am a fussy eater!! The beach wasnt the best it had quite a few stones in it and the sea was full of seaweed that you couldnt really stand on but if you made it out the the sandy parts it was lovely! Getting into Cancun was easy with a bus stop across the road and buses went past every 5 mins! it takes just over 10 mins to get to the center unlike the 30 as stated in some of the reviews on here! Some of the shop keepers can be a bit in your face which can be quite off putting!! but everything is quite cheap!
We only went on one trip, we went to Xcaret which we booked with the rep at the hotel the bus picked us up on time and we had an amazing day! the underground rivers are brilliant but a little crowded, there is so much to see you couldnt possibly fit it in to one day! the only thing was the show at the end of the day, none of it was in english so it was a bit hard to understand what was happening but it was entertaining none the less!
Coco Bongo is one of the most amazing clubs i have been to, i would say though go with the hotel reps as you dont have to queue and there is a special area reserved for you to sit in and it is waiter service!
We had a brilliant time and will definately be going to Cancun again.
The only thing that we have to say bad is that on the way back despite paying extra for the flight upgrades we werent sat next to each other, we spoke to the rep who wasnt helpful at all, but when we got on the plane the cabin crew sorted it out and we got to sit next to each other!! And the flight is shorter on the way back which is even better!!

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
this place is amazing. The rooms are clean and spacious with either one king size bed or 2 double beds. We had a beautiful view of the pool and the beach from our balcony. The food was varied every nite with a different theme (Mexican, Italian, Grill etc), no matter how fussy you are you will find something nice to eat. The food during the day was also great, a snack bar outdoors serving fast food (burgers, chips, nachos, hotdogs) and then a restuarant inside which served a variety of food plenty of salad, fruit, soup then your main courses. There was always a choice of beef, pork, chicken, fish and of course dessert!
The entertainment both during the day and at night was first class. We had all different types of sports ranging from beach football/volleyball to water basketball or crazy golf. The only complaint from my boyfriend was there was no pool table, typical man! The staff put on a different show every night for the 2 weeks we were there always involving their guests. The entertainment staff were full of energy especially Nemo, the nights out they arranged were well worth going to especially Coco Bongos, amazing place. Now to the bar staff, well what can I say Luis is the best bar man ever. No matter how busy the bar was you always had a fresh drink before you finished the one you had and the banter was non stop.
The trips you can do in Cancun are brilliant, you must do the Royal Swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Discovery. You will never experience anything like this in your life. Xcaret is tremendous so much to see, such a beautiful place and then to the Pirates, entertained before you even get on the boat, the meal is great, the drink is flowing and girls Captain Jack Sparrow is a real looker for the real Captain Jack Sparrow!
Cancun is a beautiful place with so much to do but I can honestly say I don't think it would have been as good if we stayed at a different hotel. The hotel staff from waiters, maid service, entertainment staff and the bar staff made this holiday. It was that good we are booking up again for next year, same time and without a doubt the same hotel.
Oh Stephen & Cheryl see you there next year

We are just back from the Aquamarina Beach and we had a great time! We are now currently looking to book again for next year.
Cancun itself is full of different hotels, restaurants and clubs, along with activities that we just could not all fit into our 14 days holiday. The Aquamarina Beach is ideally located and within a short bus trip to both Downtown Cancun and the lively Hotel Zone. We only grabbed a taxi twice within the whole two weeks of our holiday, using buses everyday (you can't go wrong paying only 6.5 pesos, which is around 30p each, for the bus.)
We booked all our activities through our Holiday rep, which is what we would recommend doing, but bookings for all the activities can be done through vendors located in and around the resort. They maybe slightly cheaper, but a it is a whole lot easier going through your rep.
The accommodation was very good and very clean, with the housekeeping staff cleaning the rooms daily. The air-conditioning in the rooms was superb, as it got really hot during the day and also at night, with the air-con playing a big part in cooling us down. The only downside to our room was the adjoining door to the next room, with the noise being easily heard through it.
The all inclusive food and snack bar were fine but did get a bit repetitive over the 14 days, so we did eat out to have a bit of a change. The food in the a la carte restaurant was nice and we would recommend the lobster, with the Mexican Burrito following closely next as being well worth a try. The only bad side to the all inclusive buffet style restaurant was, apart from little variety, if you were to attend the buffet later at night (the buffet dinner starts at 6.30pm and finishes at 10.30pm)say around 9pm, the food did start to get a bit cold with the hot plates not really working too well.
The Aquamarina Beach Entertainment team were without a doubt the best entertainments team I have ever come across whilst being on holiday. There is an endless amount of activities to take part in during the day (I would recommend the Beach Volleyball as you get a great laugh!!) The main man, Nemo, was a great laugh and contributed so much to ensure we all had a great holiday. The team also take you out to all the good nightclubs and pubs at around 10.30pm after the night entertainment, and look after you the whole night whilst in the clubs and pubs. You have to go to Coco Bongo's club as it is a once in a lifetime experience and like nothing I have ever seen here in the UK.
The bar and restaurant staff were very friendly and always on hand to help with anything. The best barman in the world, Luis, also made sure you weren't shy when trying out all his different cocktails and was always smiling and serving you drink after drink.
Just as we were leaving to come home, the Lobby, Lobby Bar and a new swimming pool were being renovated and updated, as it did tend to get a bit hot in the lobby bar area at night with no air-con, but this is being upgraded and extended and air-con installed.
The swimming pool was nice, along with the small beach as well and always kept clean. The Jacuzzi was disappointing and did not look like a Jacuzzi, so we didn't bother going in.
Overall, we had an amazing holiday (I would seriously recommend doing the Royal Swim / Mexican Magic Dolphin swimming at Dolphin Discovery, it was an unbelievable experience!) and I would not hesitate at all in returning to the Aquamarina Beach. We are looking to return in 2007 and enjoy another great holiday!

We have just arrived back from Aaquamarina Beach - the hotel is adequate - cleaned very well but in need of re-furb throughout whole hotel - loud music round the pool but situated on beach which was great.
The entertainment team were friendly & were busy all day if you wanted to join in - on a night though after about 10pm if you didn't want to go to club there was nothing really to do
The food was fine but lacked variety as same weekly menu - so we tended to eat out in 2 week as meals out were excellent & reasonble
The drinks were fine - lots of cocktails to try & even ny husband said the beer was ok for AI
The staff are very helpful & friendly we had a great holiday
The hotel was too far away from central zone & had to taxi or get bus if went anywhere for about 20-30 mins
Cancun itself is brillian great things to do day & night even if there were taxes on anything & everything!
You must go snorkling it is amazing & second largest after Great Barrier!
Nights out in Cancun are brilliant- even if you only go out once you must go Coco Bongo as it is a show/nightclub that cannot be missed!
Overall great holiday which was worth the long haul flight - would definately go
back but stay more central hotel
You will enjoy stay at Aquamarina if you go realising that this is 3* hotel

The hotel was very clean, but the rooms are very basic, there is no fridge and no tea making facilities. Maid service every day with clean towels daily. Safe deposit box in the room and beach towels are provided.
The resteraunt food was luke warm for the first two days, but after someone complained it was fine, although very repetative.(if you like chicken, beef and mexican food you'll be fine). The al la carte resteraunt was lovely, you can book in there for a meal once a week. The snack bar throughtout the day was fine, burgers, pizza, chilli, fries, salad, etc. The beach was nice, not very big, but clean. But the sea wasnt very nice to walk in, abit stoney when you first walk in & lots of seaweed, the sand was VERY soft,if you stood still you started to sink. We went to wallmart and bought some shoes to wear in the water, they made a big difference (£6).Apparently the nicer beaches were further down (so we were told!)
Went swimming with the dolphins, that was an amazing experience. If you like underwater experiences try Bob Cancun, that also was truly amazing. It's like having your own personal submarine and the excursion was so well organized and totally safe.Would reccomend it to all, even people who cant swim were on our trip and they loved it.(bobcancun.com, check it out)
Have a night out on the pirate ships, lovely meal and a good nights entertainment for £40 each, good fun!
Lots of night clubs to visit.
All in all a lovely holiday.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
The Aqua Marina Beach hotel is a good hotel taking into account the room, food, staff location and entertainment.
I found our room to be spacious and well air conditions with a georgeous sea view. The rooms were cleaned daily by quite friendly staff who made our room nice with finishing touches such as moulding our towels in to Swan shapes. The beds were large and comfortable the only downfall was the wall are thin, you could hear your people in adjoining rooms snoring.
The hotel has a jacuzzi which unfortunately during our two week stay was not clean. There was a regular slimy film on the surface, probably from sun tan lotions. The bubble jet was not strong but this didn't prevent it being in constant use every evening.
Meals were ok but they could do with a little variey. I epecially enjoyed using to A la Carte resturant and would recommend trying the Lobster or Steak dishes. This resturant is in a nice setting in the evening, over looking a georgeous pool - quite romantic.
The entertainment staff were brilliant, taking all hotelliers out to clubs. After the hurricane there were not many places to visit in the evening. For all clubbers I would recommend Fat Tuesdays and Daddy O's.
I generaly found my stay slightly boring due to the fact that the hotel zone area being destroyed due to the hurricane. All of the main clubs and bars were in excessable so most of the time was spent on excursions and chilling out on the hotel beach. I am sure Cancun will be up and running againg in a few years, time when I may return to experience the full cancun experience.
Excursions which I recommend are X Hal where you can snorkel to your hearts content and jump off the leap of faith, visit the Myan Island for a glorious beach and good food, and take a trip on a James Bond Speed boat all quite exciting.
Beware mexicans selling time shares, and people ripping you off trying to sell useless articals.
The main shopping centres are still under repair the was only one main one in the hotel zone a Luxury Shopping centre. There are resturants and bars in the downtown area which have not been affected by the hurricane.
On the whole I did enjoy my stay due to meeting great people at the hotel and felt quite refreshed on my return home.
I have not been to Cancun before so I had a good time, but I have to warn people who have been before to prepare to be shocked at the devistation a Natural Disaster can cause.

we got to the hotel & we were gutted, our room was ground floor on the pool side & it had an adjoining door to the next room, although this was locked we could hear everything, ev en them getting up for a 5am wee, not pleasant!!
the resort had been ruined by the october hurricane & cancun was like a building site, half the trips were cancelled & the pubs & clubs were shut down.
the food was cold & left out all day & there was a sighting of rats.
overall this resort is disgusting, it was the worst 2week all inc holiday we have ever been on & the aquamarina beach is disgusting.

I visited this website before I went to Cancun to find out about the place and the accomodation and the comments are generally correct.
The location was a bit out the way but it only takes about 10 mins on the bus to the centre were all the pubs and nightclubs are.
The accomodation was nice enough with plenty of activities and entertainment on for all ages to participate. The staff are all very friendly too!
I found the food was ok on some nights and terrible other nights but that gave us the opportunity to go out for something to eat instead of staying in the hotel all the time.
Everyone has to go to Coco Bongos for a night out and the Pirates show on the boats - suits all ages as the shows are amazing! Also try the Hard Rock Cafe - foods great and the live band are brill!
However, warning to all - DON'T GO TO LA BOOM nightclub esp on weekend night - its full of locals and can be quite threatening and scary!
Big tip - excuse the pun but the waiters expect tips from you esp in Coco Bongo, so when you get into the place just get a waiter and tip them around $5-10 and they will get you drinks for the rest of the night!
I would recommend both cancun and the Aquamarina Beach to friends and family and would go back..just be prepared for the long flight and jet lag!!!!

Cancun is a great place - very lively with lots of nightclubs and places to eat. There are about 3 or 4 huge shopping malls and lots of flea markets and craft shops. However it is quite Americanised - TFI Friday, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe etc.
Getting around is easy as buses run the whole length of the resort every few minutes around the clock and there is just one price - about 6 pesos. It's very safe to go out and about, even at night.
Aquamarina Beach Hotel is right on the beach, with a little jetty where you can get a catamaran or a ferry to Isla Mujeres, take a jungletour on individual speedboats, hire jetskis, or go snorkelling.
The rooms are comfortable and clean, although they could do with a facelift, especially in the bathroom (no bath, just a shower) but the view from the balcony is superb. The thing which makes this hotel special is the friendliness of the staff, especially the bar staff who are so efficient and seem to know every cocktail ever produced. Try the 'Caribbean Sea', it's wonderful!
The food is good, but with a very Mexican flavour, although there were Italian, Mexican and British theme nights. The outside evening entertainment is good, but the room for the indoor entertainment is very basic and uncomfortable.
There's just one thing we should say:
DON'T GO IN SPRING BREAK!!!
From around mid-February until mid-April the whole resort is invaded by American college students. They just take over Cancun and you can't avoid them. They are very loud, especially when they come in at 2am or 5 am, shouting from room to room and balcony to balcony, and banging on doors to find their friends and carry on the party.
The only bar open in the evening is the Lobby bar and this was complete chaos, with the barmen desperately trying to deal with the crowds of kids wanting tequila slammers. There is nowhere to sit and have a quiet drink, unless you have a meal in the a la carte restaurant, where the food is very good. We used to take our drinks and sit on the beach.
We found the Mexican people very friendly and if you try a little Spanish they really appreciate it. Just be prepared to tip everyone, they all expect it.
Xcaret and Xel-Ha are well worth a visit, and the Jungle Tour is exciting but the one we enjoyed the most was Chichen Itza. It was a long coach ride, but we had a break with a lovely meal, drinks and entertainment. Carlos, our tour guide explained everything very well and the highlight was the climb to the top of the pyramid, although coming down was a bit scary. Don't forget your camera - the view from the top is amazing.
We enjoyed Cancun and would definitely go back to the Aquamarina Beach Hotel, but not during Spring Break.

Hotel described as a 4* would not make a 3* in Europe,
Food was awful, everything was cold and was swimming in a sauce of some description,if you wanted decent food you had to pay extra in a separate restaurant even though we went all inclusive!! the beer was weak and poor, the cocktails were very colourful but dont expect to get drunk as they were weaker than the beer, no bacon or english type sausages but you can have cornflakes and a freshly cooked omelette at breakfast,
the entertainment staff were only interested in the younger end as they also organised the trips to the nightclubs the only daytime entertainment for anyone over 40 was Bingo or making paper aeroplanes,
dont expect to relax beside the pool because the disco music was unbearably loud, even when asked to reduce the volume it was turned up again within 5 minutes everyone complained but to no avail, you have to go on the beach for a bit of peace, you can watch english football at the sports arena next to the hotel, the hotel was very clean, staff very friendly,

We were a bit worried about going to Cancun on holiday because we thought it would be really couply but not at all. Probably because the Aquamarina Beach is one of the cheaper hotels it doesn't attract many honeymooners. It was full of groups of young people who were up for a laugh.
The hotel is not the best location in Cancun but only about 10 mins on the bus into the nightlife area, and the buses are every 5 mins right through the night. The beach again is not the best but nice & quiet. The amazing dolphin beach is about 30 mins away.
The accomodation is pretty basic but definitely better than your average European Hotel.
The hotel staff are fantastic especially the entertainment staff, in particular Omar! They take you out to the best clubs every night. Cocobongo Nightclub is an absolute must!
The food at the hotel is OK but does get a but repetitive towards the end of the fortnight.
The tours are great, especially swimming with Dolphins at Isla Mujeres and Xel-ha.
I would definitely go back to Cancun and also this hotel is good for those on a budget. If you're looking for peaceful luxury this is probably not the place for you.

The flight was not as bad as other reviews I have read on this site, food and staff on the plane were great. When we arrived at the hotel we were pleasantly suprised to find that our Travel Agents had organised us a free upgrade on our room.
The Aquamarina caters for all age groups, there is organised entertainment day and night if you want it, the food served in the restaraunt was fantastic we could not fault anything about this lovely hotel.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
I have just returned from 2 weeks in Cancun, and I have to say I had a fantastic time. As with all holidays there good and bad things. I'll start with the bad things first as there is only one, and that is the flight. This destination is not worth considering for only one week due to the distance you have to travel and I have to be honest that the comfort on the plane was terrible. No leg room and on the way out the cabin crew were in a terrible mood. Its a long way and everyone gets restless. I don't think I've ever been so uncomfortable.
The rest of the holiday was superb. The hotels was wonderful, the staff couldn't do enough for you, especially when it came to the cleanliness of the room. Everyday it was cleaned with replacement towels and it was just spotless. With it being all inclusive everyone makes the most of the bar but if you treat the bar staff right they will always remember your drink and serve you before others. This was especially important as it was American Spring Break whilst I was there which means a lot of young Americans populating the bar but the staff always looked after those who look after them.
I've read a few of the other reports about this hotel on the site and I do feel they are a little harsh. The beach isn't the best but even when the hotel is busy there is plenty of space for everyone and the better beaches are only a short bus ride away (try Dolphin Beach). Also the food in the hotel was fine. A good selection with different specialities each night. But if you got bored there was always the A La Carte restaurant and you could eat there every night if you wanted to and that was fantastic.
With regards to the resort there are so many things to be doing. I have to be honest I went away to do absolutely nothing and I succeeded, however many people did various trips and enjoyed them all. If you go out then there are plenty of places to choose from. I have to recommend for a fantastic meal TGI Fridays, you have to try the Orio Madness dessert, wonderful. Also the Outback Steakhouse does some of the best steaks anywhere.
If you're looking to party then on a Sunday night head down to Coco Bongo's as they put on one of the most entertaining shows I've watched in a long time, definitly one you'll need your camera for. If it's a quiet night out then try Carlos 'n Charlies, wonderful food and a great atmosphere.
Just be warned if you go between the end of Febuary and the beginning of April then you will be surrounded by a Club 18-30's atmosphere that may be a bit to noisy at times, but it's great fun.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
Just got back from a wonderful holiday. No problems with the flight, airport wasnt as bad as we expected, all luggage is searched but doesnt take too long.
On arrival, dont forget to take change for tips as the tipping starts straight away, you dont seem to get a choice if you want to take your baggage to the room. The service was great though and we enjoyed being spoilt.
Hotel room are clean and tidy and maid service good. The only criticism of the room is the air conditioning is noisy although we believe they are in the process of updating the air conditioning throughout the hotel.
Pool clean, dont worry about sunbeds always available. Beach towels available for free. Swim up bar is brill. Do try the cocktails. Right on beach, which isnt the best but ok. Lots of water sports available but for a charge.
Food - generally good with various selection although the dessert selection could be better.
Hotel staff - excellant all very friendly, particularly Ismael, Luis and Jose who are three top barmen!!
Entertainment staff - excellant, always inviting but no hassle if you dont want to join in. Watch out if you play tequila volley -ball though!!!!!!!. Entertainment at night wasnt so good, great if you could go out to the clubs but with the kids we couldnt and little going on in the hotel after 10pm. Hotel location is near the end of the hotel zone not a lot going on around unless you jump on a bus which run every 6 mins.
rep - went to the welcome meeting which wasnt very illuminating didnt bother with any other contact after that. Dont book your trips through the rep, you will get them cheaper elsewhere. If you go accross the road to a stand outside one of the shops called Gloria tours, she seems to be one of the best and reasonable around. We booked all our trips through her. The coaches are far more superior than those we travelled on with the rep to and from the airport and all seem well organised.
The trips we did included
Wet and wild water park - you can do this without booking through a tour operator, the bus system is very simple and cheap only 6 pesos each no matter which stop (watch out because you wont get change). Great fun, not much queing, if you can have a go on the shotover jet it was good but will cost you extra.
Xel - Ha - fantastic day, we had never done any snorkelling before and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, lots to do we didnt get chance to see all around.
Chitchen Itza - far bit of travelling, make sure you take insect repellant, we felt it a must see for a bit of history, kids made it up the pyramid but we didnt.
Xcaret - a long day if you go to the evening show also. Lots of wildlife to see, snorkelling and swimming through underground caves a must.
Isla Mujures - pleasant boat trip to nearby island, excursions available if you want when you get there but you do pay extra. Beach lovely.
Overall a great holiday, was put off looking around the local shops as they do hassle you and are very persistant. Wouldnt have a problem with going back.

We arrived on the plane and the heat hit us straught away, so hot and humid. We wentoutside the airport to find the rep but there is no rep only a mexican guy who takes u to the hotel in a transit and dumps you at the hotel with no idea what to do, this was the onlt thing wrong with the holiday the REP, the only time she showed up was to sell the excursions and we were stupid enough to buy these with her, DONT u will get them a lot cheaper outside the resort. If I go to cancun again it will not be with airtours.
The hotel on the other hand was great. It was so clean and the maid came every day and changed beds and towels. The food was good as well always somthing there that you like although there was always a few dodgy stomachs!!
All the staff were great soo friendly and always willing to help. Ismael the bartender was one the nicest and funniest people u will meet, always gives u the best cocktails and measures as well!! The 2 amination guys Luis and (we called him Antonio banderas!!) were really good as well always up for a laugh and orgainsing things to do as well as taking u to the clubs and bars!!
If i go back to cancun again I would defiently got back to aquamarina!
The nightlife in cancun is ok, most of the clubs are a ripoff. You pay $25 in and thats SUPPOSED to be open bar, although in coco bongos and la boom the waiters refused to serve u unless u gave them a good tip, so i would rather stcik to the bars. But u should go to coco bongos to see the show its brilliant one of the best nights ull get in cancun!!
Other good bars are Pat O'Briens, mardi gras kind of bar which has great food too, slod planet hollywood and hardrock are great nights out and once again great food.
Tony Romas and TGIs are another 2 musts.
The excursions are ok, Jungle tour is one of the best and i would recommend this, dont go the caribeen funday its the most boring day of my life stuck on a tiny island for 4 hours with cr*p food and nothing to do. Xcaret was pretty boring, i would go to xel ha instead.
Overall the holday was great 2 weeks of my life ill never forget, i defiently recommend Aquamarina Beach as your hotel.

we got to cancun in the afternoon, when its was very hot & humid. rep!!! what rep?? airtours are a waste of time, the flight was terrible your treated like sheep just herded here there & every where, and please dont ask for any help filling out ur visa because all you will get is 'i dont no'. but the hotel is fantastic the people there are so nice and friendly.
the bar man luis was a great laugh. the entertainment staff were brill they kept the guests entertained when we had rain ( and boy did we have rain). the rooms are kept clean, nice clean towels etc. all in all a fantastic holiday well worth the money ( apart from the flight with airtours!!)the swim with dolphins is a must but a word of warning dont go on the late swim because by the time you are finshed viewing your video & pictures you have to run for the last boat off the island. also dont bother going downtown even though the rep might tell you to go because they try and push all types of things on you and its a bit scary!!! but all in all a fantastic holiday and id certainly be returning

We stayed at this hotel from 12th-26th May. The weather was hot and sunny every day (35 degrees) and rained for 1hr one afternoon. The hotel was very clean and the rooms were cleaned every day. The food was good, always something nice available any time of day, and both our tummies were fine! The best part of the hotel had to be the staff, they were so friendly and helpful. The entertainment team were brilliant, from 9-5 they were organising volleyball, bingo, football for everybody, but they did not pester you at all if you were not interested. The evening entertainment was from 9-10:30 and was varied and fun to watch.Again there was no pressure to get involved.
There were not many English people at this hotel, which meant there were a lot of Americans and Canadians, which were, on occasions, very loud, but we got used to them after the first week! You do not need to take towels as they are provided by the pool (as many as you like) and plenty in the room. There always seemed to be plenty of sunbeds, no getting up at 6am, more like 11! We had a brilliant time at this hotel and recommend the trip to isla mujeres (not sure how to spell that) on the catamaran. Also the diving is amazing, but does involve a very up and downy little boat! The flight with My Travel was awful, 13hrs there and 9 back. The seats were horrible and boney, and you only get a window seat generally if you pre-book, and a lot of people who didn't ended up sitting apart.

We went to Cancun as its a place that we both wanted to go. The flight was a bit grueling but not to bad. The greeting at the other end was nice after we had managed to get through passport control but the reps assume you know the drill as there are mexicans ready to take your baggage and they then dump your bags and hands ate held out for a tip. So make sure you take some loose change. Upon arrival at the Aqua marina we were not disappointed. The hotel was very clean and the staff very helpful and pleasent. you have to wear the wristband for all inclusive so a lovely thick tan line is on your arrival back in the uk.
The food was nice. One night there was just fish though and as i dont like it i was stuck a bit, but a good choice of fruit and always a fresh dish being cooked infront of you. The best meal of the day was by far the Breakfasts. Well worth getting up for. The entertainment was really good during the day and loads of things to do but at night time unless you wanted to get blind drunk on excusions out to the bars there was no entertainment in the hotel.
We did a a trip to go swimming with the dolphins which was unbelivably expensive (around £80 EACH!) but the rep in the hotel informed us poorly. When we arrived for the trip we found that as we were going on the boat we were having to pay a departure tax of around 100 pesos. lucky were had taken a bit of money with us. On arrival to the island of women where you swim you are left to your own devises for around two hours before the swim. You can swim in the hotel or go out around the island in a golf cart but be warned you have to get yourselves into town before you can get one and then take it back at the end of the 2 hours and still be back in time for your swim. The swim itself was fantastic a dream come true but was completly annoyed that we then had another hour and a half wait to get back to cancun on the boat.
Cancun itself was disappointing nothing but hotels and shopping malls, yet when you did see the sea the picture was beautiful. Basically unless you are willing to pay out for all the trips its a hotel based holiday which you can go to Majorca for and cut out the 10 hour flight.

I have just come back from Mexico and what a fantastic place. The Avalon Grand is a brilliant hotel, the food was great, the people were really excellent, they were so friendly. They definitely made our holiday. The only thing that i didn't think was great and that was the entertainment, but you got so many good clubs & bars to visit it doesn't matter anyway. A special mention about the people in Kelly's bar in the Avalon, they were smashing!!!!!!!!!
We didn't have a bad experience at the airport as other people had. We had our bags checked but we were through within 40 mins.
I recommend the swimming with the dolphins and the jungle tour. Pat O'Briens, Coco Bongo, Daddo's, Hard Rock Cafe & Planet Hollwood to name but a few, were really good night's out.
I think that going all inclusive is the way to go because eating out is really expensive.
Overall the holiday was a fantastic one, and i am already looking at prices for next year.

We spent our honeymoon at this fantastic hotel in august 2004 and our jaws hit the floor when we arrived. While checking in we were given a glass of champagne and a cold towel as it was very hot and then taken to our room on a golf cart as the hotel is massive. with optics and a double jacuzzi in the room we didnt think it could get much better but it did. The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble, the food was superb what ever you wanted it would be done for you.
The pool and the lagoon were loveky and you didnt have to leave your sunbed for a drink as there is waitress service. The only drawback was the lobby bars were open air so with no air conditioning so it was pretty humid bur even that couldnt spoil the holiday as you were sat in luxurious surroundings and the cocktails just kept coming Luis the bar man was fantastic and makes the best mojito i have ever tasted! met some lovely people not just from britain but from chicago, pittsburgh and alabama. Chitzen itza is a must but take plenty of water as there are no shops near the piramids. Senor frogs is a must its a great bar with a fantastic atmosphere we went to have a quick drink and ended up staying all night!
We were treated like a king and queen for the whole time we stayed at the aventura spa and i dont think i will ever have another holiday like it i actually cried on the plane home because i didnt want to leave!!

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
My wife wanted an all-inclusive holiday with hot weather and total relaxation. That is certainly what you get at the Spa Palace.
Travel To The Hotel
The outbound flight on First Choice was excellent - very pleasant & helpful cabin crew.
We were a little hesitant once we arrived at the airport at Cancun - its not very big and is certainly not the most modern of airports. However, we found our way through customs & immigration easily (though a good 30min queue for customs where everybody's bags were searched) and quickly boarded the transfer coach. The guide (Canadian from First Choice) was very enthusiastic and knowledgable about the area, do's and don'ts etc. The transfer took about 1hr I'd guess, stopping at a couple of hotels on the way. (The hotel is about 35 miles south of Cancun, nearer to Playa del Carmen)
On the trip down to the Spa Palace my wife was a bit worried about what looked like some 'dodgy' hotels we went past, thinking ours would be similar. However, when we arrived at the entrance to our destination it was obvious this was completely different to what we had glanced at on the way down - sooo much better.
Its a big place. The entrance to reception was huge and we were attended to immediately. The basics were explained quickly and efficiently and we went back outside where a friendly bell-boy already had our luggage on a cart waiting to take us to our room. A 5-minute trip on a golf cart (told you this was a big place!) took us to the other side of the complex and our room.
The Room
A big air-conditioned room with double jacuzzi. Bed was very comfortable, and must have been at least a king-size. TV with a number of channels, mini-bar (with a few cans of beer, soft drinks, bottled water - refilled every 2 days), safe (free, easy to use), balcony (we didn't have a hammock as we were in a corner room, but most rooms did have one). Small bathroom, but a huge shower. Plenty of towels.
Overall, an excellent room. Cleaned (very well) daily, turn-down service at night if you wish, and the maids created a different 'towel sculpture' each day. (This provided some humour for us too - the first few days were items like an elephant, small dog, heart, but then one evening we came back to the room and found a quite disturbing model of a small child/baby sat on the edge of the jacuzzi! Chuckie's Return!)
Restaurants
The hotel is split into a north and south side. There are 6 restaurants available with a lot of variety in food styles, 3 north, 3 south. At night 2 of the 6 require 'smart/casual' attire - no shorts, collared shirt/polo required - the Californian-style (north) and Mexican-style (south). These 2 are 'a la carte', with just a few choices of meal in each section. Other restaurants are Oriental-style (a la carte, north), Mediterranean-style (buffet, south), and 2 general/grill restaurants (1 north, 1 south, both a la carte, but much wider choice).
To be honest, we found dinners to be slightly lacking and lunches to be superb, so we tended to eat a fuller lunch and a light dinner. However, in saying that, you shouldn't be out off by our comments on the dinner - it was excellent and by far the best we've encountered in a large hotel environment catering for the number of people it did. Our favourite dinner restaurant was the Mediterranean-style where they cooked your choice of pasta meal in front of you, as they did with the steaks on the other side of the resaturant.
We actually found the Mexican-style restaurant to be the most disappointing as it didn't seem to have any 'traditional' Mexican food on the menu. (But maybe that's just because we don't have much Mexican food here in the UK, only 'our version' of it?)
Whatever your preference in food you *will* find lots of food that you like here. You *won't* be able to try everything on the menus in each restaurant - unless you stay for about 5 weeks!
Amenities
As I said, this is a big hotel. We were on the south side. The main pool here is big, but generally shallow. Swim up bar in the main area (Try the electric lemonade!) with cafe attached for light bites. Plenty of loungers provided, though the sun-shades are usually gone by about 0730 (so get up early if you need one!) Waitress service all around the pool for drinks, a couple of small 'bars/food counters' around the pool if you want to get your own drinks or a burger and fries (usually). There is another large pool on the north side, which we thought looked a touch nicer than the south. There are 'lagoons' on the seaward side of the hotel that you can swim, snorkel and canoe in (equipment provided foc). Also, there is a PADI center on site where you can get your diving qualifications (more later...) Elsewhere on site we found a climbing wall, obstacle course, and of course, there's a large gym with a whole range of spa treatments. Table-tennis tables, pool tables, small shops, tennis courts.
Spa Treatments
My wife had a manicure/pedicure one day which she thoroughly enjoyed, but that was the extent of our visits there. We requested a 'couple massage' where both of you can get a set of treatments together, but were told that wasn't available yet (even though its in the brochure). Of course, that may have been rectified by now.
Other Points
**This is an adults-only hotel** Meaning 'No children allowed' rather than other connotations!
We met 1 other couple from the UK while we were there - virtually everyone else was from the States - so the pool bar can get loud. But you can certainly have a fun time if you want to join in with the volleyball (pool or 'normal') etc. that goes on daily.
Other Things To Do
The island of Cozumel has the 2nd largest reef in the world. I did a PADI course at the hotel specifically to scuba on the reef. Al, the instructor at the hotel, was excellent - patient, funny, fluent English etc.
The First Choice rep met us on our first morning to go through the usual stuff. She was OK and we bought a trip to the ruins at Chichen-Iza. We wouldn't do that again - a full 12hr+ day travelling by coach (via other hotels and villages) to get maybe 4hrs at the ruins. For the same price you can get a hire car for 2 or 3 days and see as much of the ruins as you like yourself.
There are a few other hotels in the 'Palace' group - you can get daily use of their facilities with the pass you get a Spa Palace for free. (I think a round of golf at the Moon Palace is extra though - and somebody told me it was very expensive)
Summary
An excellent hotel and holiday overall. We would definitely go again, although we might need to save up for a while!

This was an amazing resort if you want to just rest and chill out. There is SO much to do within the complex. We didnt want an active break this year but a bit of pampering. It was fantatsic! No hesitations recommending it to anyone. Most people there had more money than us and spent a lot on spa treatnments, jewellry and excursions but it wasnt snobby or oppressive. But it is an expensive area. If you need or want drinks to take back or other things go to a store called (well sounds like) chad rowey (last bit pronouced like row as in an argumant).
Hope that helps someone- I'd go back tomorrow.

Wonderful hotel with fabulous staff. We had a fabulous time and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Unfortunately during our stay we were hit by a hurricane, but the staff remained calm and looked after us beautifully. Thank you all so much!
We were greeted on arrival with champagne and a rose and the service stayed at this impeccable standard throughout our stay. The food in all the restaurants was of an extremely high standard. The service in this hotel is exceptional - entertainment staff, poolside waiters, everyone! The rooms were comfortable with the added advantage of all spirits and room service included in the All Inclusive package. The double jacuzzi is a lovely touch - an exceptional experience!
In short this was the best holiday we have had and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to all.

Just arrived back from two weeks at the Barcelo Costa Real.
Overall had a great holiday - Cancun is excellent with so much to do. This was our second year on the trot and we would definately visit again. However the Barcelo Costa was good but not as good as last year when it was owned and operated by the Real Resorts group. The new chain have made a few little changes which in our opinion have made a difference. For example last year twice per week they held theme parties on the beach where the buffet restaurnt would set up and cook on the beach but this has stopped. When we asked a waiter why nodoby could really give us an answer. Also next year the changes are going to continue with extra charges for premium spirits and room service been introduced. Overhall the hotel was still good and we enjoyed our stay. Most of the staff have been retained and they really do make you feel welcome and go the extra mile. The food is also excellent with a choice of four restaurants of which three are a la carte. There is no limit on the number of times you visit each one and the Mexican was our favourite.
Overall we would recommend the hotel to anyone but just beaware of any other extra charges they may introduce in the future. As for Cancum must do's are Coco Bongo's and the Captain Hook pirate ship. If you go with first choice would fully recommend the mayan madness bar crawl - 55 dollars each all drink in - was brilliant !

We have just returned home from a 2 week holiday and all i can say is FANTASTIC!
this hotel is perfect. a little bit away from the main night life but its so easy to get the bus and its a brilliant experience! mexicans get the bus and sing to you on your journey for a small tip! we never got a taxi as we just loved the busses. we had a junior suite and it is huge! you could get a football team in the shower and the bed is about 6ft wide! the air con is really good and you will need it. the weater was in the 90's.
the maid changed out towels and bedding every day and our fridge was stocked daily beer, water, soft drinks, chocolate, nuts and fruit.
unfortunatly you have to get up early if you want a bed by the pool as they go quickly but the beach is right by the hotel with a bar which served snacks, club sandwiches, buffalo wings, burgers and all with chips so i would say dont bother getting up to get a sun bed as there are always loads on the beach.
the entertainment team work really hard and do different activities around the pool every day for example, teaching you how to make cocktails, water vollyball, aerobics and loads more!
if you want to go downtown to the night life you can go on your own or the entertainment team will take you on a coach to a different club every night leaving at 10.30 and they get you in V.I.P,
get you a table and make sure you are served all night. it costs $40 (£20) which is your entry and all you can drink all night! fantastic value we thought! i would really recommend doing this as you also get to know the people staying in your hotel and its a really good way to make friends.
there are loads of different ways to swim with the dolphins at different places but the reps in the hotel will tell you all the different packages available. we went to wet and wild. it cost $135 (£70) each which included a foot push by the dolphin and all day enterance to the water park. i really recommend you swim with the dolphins as it is a magical experience!
on the beach at the hotel there is a hut where you can take the non-moterised water sport things from. the man who works there is called Raul. he arranged a day long catamaran trip for us to another island with full buffet lunch, snorkling off of a coral reef and all you could drink for $40 (£20). the hotel reps were offering the same thing for $85 (£42)
we also hired speed boats for a jungle safari $40 (£20) for 2hrs 30 mins which was brilliant, the hotel reps wanted double!. jet skis are $35 for about 30 mins. i really recommend you book with him. hes really helpful and works so hard keeping the beach spotless.
the one thing to remember when you book any water sports in mexico is you have to pay a water tax (about $3 per person per activity)
we went to Sinor Frogs, it was brilliant! loads to drink, fantastic music, dancing on the stage and just an amazing night!
others in our party went to Coco bongos and said it was the best club they had ever been to.
the 2 17yr olds went out with the reps on quite a few nights and always came back saying they had a fantastic time!
next to our hotel is 2 pirate ships that go out every night and have a battle out at sea. it costs $67 (£33) and thats for a steak dinner with help yourself salad and all the bits and as much as you can drink(for a change!) it was a brilliant night for all ages. little children loved it as much as the adults! lots of shouting to the other boat and cheering!
we all had an amazing time and cannot wait to go back again!

have just had a 2 week stay and cannot fault the hotel at all, very helpful and friendly staff, always working very hard to keep pool clean, serve drinks, tidy up, help with any queries etc. there are always competitions to enter during day at poolside to entertain you, or for peace and quiet try down at hotel beach, which is also well kept and clean.
thre are 4 restaurants to use,
ALBATROS- buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner, different theme every night of the week,i.e oriental, italian, bbq, etc. food quite good depending on your taste but always has burgers, hot dogs and steaks every main meal.
mexican, spanish, and seafood restaurants open each day and offer a very good menu afternoon and night, seafood restaurant also serves chicken and steaks at night as well as breakfast in morning. overall a wide variety of food for all tastes and good service.
the rooms were spotless and quite spacious, roof fan and air conditioning. ironing board and iron, hair dryer, tv and dvd player, fridge/mini bar which is stocked everyday for no extra charge. forgot to mention that no towels need packed as towels supplied at poolside and renewed whenever needed.
BARS/ENTERTAINMENT
beach bar open till 11pm always busy as is the lobby/main bar. mary keeps your drinks coming all night till 12. 24 hour bar upstairs on next level with snacks and drinks all thru the night.
poolside entertainment starts about 8.45 till back of 10. most are what you would expect, singing dancing, fancy costumes etc ,different for 7 nights then repeated whereas the lobby bar dou are on most night or nothing if their night off. they are ok for first couple of nights but think hotel should have some variety here as 14 nights is a lot to hear same band all the time even though you go out on the town most nights.
RESORT - mostly hotels all along main road and have to go in centre for nightlife. coco bongos is a must for all ages to see, party zone full and noisy but didnt see one bit of trouble, done pub crawl with reps ,4 bars then coco bongos $60, drinks/entrance fees included.
hard rock cafe, senor frogs, margarittville, pat o,briens worth a visit. not much bars to just have a quiet drink in if u wished.most bars work bands for unlimited drinks for $35-$40 or pay as you go after $5 cover fee.
TRIPS- try pirates just round by the beach for a great night out, two boats ,plenty laughs, games ,food and drink and battle between two ships at sea.
also book island trip here $15 return and hire golf buggy while on board to get you round the island, takes about 2hrs to santer round the island on these, remember driving licence.
All in all a great hotel ,great staff, good food. weather poor for 2 days but good the rest, average resort. please tip hotel staff as wages made mostly from tips which they fully deserve.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
stayed in the barcelo costa in cancun for 2 weeks in april. the hotel was amazing and the staff were so friendly, checking into the hotel was very easy even with the ammount of people arriving at the hotel. The staff on the reception spoke very good english so this made the check in a lot easier. We were shown to our rooms after check in which was a junior suite, the room was very clean and spacious, there was a balcony over looking the pool are and sea and a hammock on the balcony to. The bathroom was very clean and big, with a shower big enough to fit a football team in.
the food in the hotel was of a very high qulity but a little repatative after the first week, the food in thet mexican al la carte resturant was especially nice. around the pool of a day they were entertainers to keep you occupied, they were the nicest people you could possibily meet and made sure that you had a good time especially luis, gama, siad. of a night the hotel would have show on in the main stage the show finnishes around 9.30. after that there were a couple who sang every night the same songs to which would drive you mad. at 10.30 the activity and entertainment team would go to a different club each night and you could buy an all inclusive wrist band off them for $40 you are took to the club on a coach and get a vip area were all your drinks get bought over to you all night (remember to tip tho that way you get your drinks faster) i would advise going to club basic the atmosphere in there was brilliant!! for the last few days of the holiday we upgraded our room to a suite. the room was absolutley huge and had a bar in the corner of the rooom and a jacuzzi on the balcony, it only cost $15 per person per night to upgrade and it is well worth it.
we did the dolphin discovery trip and id advise anyone to swim with the dolphins while you are there, the day we went was the only day we had bad weather so were not able to do any snorkeling or swimming with the sharks. the all inclusive in the hotel means all inclusive, there is a 24hr self service bar and food area and all the spirits are top brands like smirnoff vodka and bacardi, the service in the hotel was first class you never have to get up to get a drink at the pool or the bar, as soon as they see you have nealry finnished your drink they bring you another, but remember to tip as they work very hard for there money and dont get paid very much.
i would definatly go back to mexico and would stay in this hotel again!!!!!!!

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
we stayed here the second 2 weeks in March. Our first week was full of young Americans as it was Spring Break. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to families or anyone wanting a quiet holiday during this time. We are defintely going to go back next year but will be going the first 2 weeks in March as it is younger & more of a party atmosphere.
The hotel was lovely, rooms really nice, lovely pool & beach.
The only bad things were the entertainment at night wasn't very good.
It's not really near the town, but that doesn't matter coz there's taxi's & buses right outside the hotel, which don't cost much. The nightlife in cancun is wicked, you must go to Coco Bongos!!
It's not the kind of place you visit & stay in the hotel for the whole time, there's too much to do day & night.
If you want to go out at night, then see the entertainment staff at the hotel, they'll sort you out!
I would defintely recommend this hotel.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
As part of a group of three lads from London aged in their 20's, we decided to venture out of europe for a different holiday. Knowing full well that it was spring break and likely to be busy we weren't dissappointed!! We went from 11th-25th March 2007.
The room we had didn't have much of a balcony and we were given two double beds and a campbed to crash on. Apart from that it was clean with a tv, dvd player, iron, safe etc.. etc... The room was cleaned daily which was a credit to the maid.
There were four restuarants, one of which was a buffet. The food in all four was good and we found that we could eat pretty much any time of the day. There was also a 24 bar which had much needed pizza to scoff on when we came in at 5 in the morning.
There were three bars. The lobby bar was pretty much that... a lobby. Stil it was quite busy at night and we were entertained by two dodgy karaoke singers as we made the most of the free bar before heading out into the Cancun nightlife. The beach bar was good during the day and did attract a crowd at night but closed around 11pm, and there was the 24 hours bar which was just incase you weren't drunk enough after your night out. This bar had snacks as well as beer on tap and a selection of spirits and soft drinks. This bar was always busy in the early hours as revellers spoke about the events of the night.
The staff were friendly and always willing to help, sometimes it was a bit of a problem getting served at the bar and so i would advise giving the baman a small tip at the begining of the night to ensure constant service.
The pool was just a pool withh loads of sun loungers and the beach was clean with equally loads of sun loungers.
If there is one thing you take from this review then let it be this.... If you plan on going out to the clubs in Cancun then speak to the entertainment staff at the hotel. For around $40 you will get a coach down to the club, q-jump, taken to a VIP area and given free drinks all night, often we had bottles of Smirnoff Vodka with mixers put on our table. They go to different clubs every night and stay with you in the club to make sure you are being looked after. You can walk around the club and then come back to the VIP area, and trust me it is nice having an a area where you can sit and what the 'show'.
Now of course their were the odd things to moans about but overall, the Barcelo was a fantastic hotel and i would recommend it to anyone whom wishes to stay in Cancun.

Stayed here from February 7th-21st. We were celebrating my 50th birthday.
The staff couldn't have been better. Made me feel like a princess. The hotel is excellent. There are 4 restaurants but we mostly ate in the Mexican restaurant. You have to book in the morning but we thought you could only book for one day but soon found out you could book for any of the restaurants for a few days in advance which saves you having to book every morning. The food was very nice - freshly cooked steak and burgers while you wait. The soups are out of this world, I would recommend the lime soup. At first we were tipping every waiter but decided we would just tip at the end of the holiday to the waiters who were very attentive to us, but in all honesty they were all very nice. I would definately recommend this hotel for families, singles, couples. It would suit everyone. The buses are a bonus coming every minute and very cheap (about 30P our money into town). We used the sister hotel Tucancun. This was also a lovely hotel. It is quite a bit from our hotel but the bus drops you right off at this hotel so it is not a problem.
I truly loved this holiday and will not forget my 50th in a hurry.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:
This was our first all inclusive holiday and overall was very good.
The hotel recently changed hands so a lot of the previous reviews are out of date, as you can longer use the facilities of other Real Group hotels. Instead, you get to use another Barcelo, which is ok, but, judging by previous revious reviews, not quite up to the 5 star standard that Real provided.
The Costa has excellent staff - very attentive and friendly - and always on hand, no matter what the time of day or noght.
We were checked in after just a few minutes., We stayed on the 3rd floor overlooking the pool and had 2 rooms. Although we specified interconnecting, we didn't get that, even though all of the rooms seem to have an inter-connecting door.
This meant that we couldn't keep as close an eye on our teenagers as we'd hoped, but it wasn't a problem as they soon made friends with the many Brits, Canadians and Americans staying at the hotel.
Rooms:
The rooms we had each contained 2 double beds, a smallish wardrobe with safe, ironing board and iron. The bathroom was large enough and contained a shower, sink, WC and a hairdryer.
Our shower wouldn't drain properly. It wasn't a plumbing problem though, simply that the floor wasn't level and it drained in the wrong direction, so whenever you needed a shower, chances were that you had to stand in an inch of cold water, unless the daily maid had been in of course.
The decor is white, but very tired and in need of redecoration. The door furniture looked very insecure and there was evidence on most doors we saw, of forced entry at some time. They all seemeed damaged in some way.
Our 16 year old was locked in his bathroom for 45 minutes after the lock failed. He called the front desk, who in turn called maintenance to get him out, so the 2 teens spent the best part of the last week without a bathroom door lock. (room 311).
Room Service: You get one free room service per day, per room and we did use it - once. An order of 2 club sandwiches with fries arrived after 20 minutes, but the fries were cold and inedible. We didn't try again, after other guests reported the same experience.
Restaurants:
There are 3 a la carte restaurants on site - a Mexican, a Spanish and a general one, together with a buffet restaurant and a 24 hour snack bar.
You have to book the a la carte restaurants 24 hours in advancevia the concierge. (for "concierge, read "Trip Seller").
Our experience with all three a la carte restaurants was poor. The service was excellent, but the food was indedible - and when they questioned why all 5 of us had left our meals in the Don Quijote restaurant, they simply shrugged their shoulders when I explained that the food was cold, tasteless (apart from the rice, which tasted strongly of fish) and horrible.
The Mexican is the best of the three, but we only went once because the menu is extremely limited and not really what you expect from Mexican cuisine.
None of us finished a meal at any of the a la carte's. My wife and eldest son will eat just about anything too!
The best of the bunch was the buffet restaurant. You go there for breakfast, lunch (if you can manage it) and dinner, without a reservation.
It gets busy and you can expect a small wait to be seated - never longer than 15 minutes if there is a large queue.
There is table service by friendly waiters who provide drinks with your meals.
The food in there was pretty good - we always found something to eat and it was generally good quality.
There is a burger bar area where you can get a freshly cooked burger, if that's what you want.
At breakfast, there is a huge choice of dishes and you can have as mch as you can eat. Be warned, there is always a queue for the omelettes and eggs - so order them first and then pick up the rest of your meal.
24 hour snack bar.
This deserves a special mention. All inclusive guests (are there any other types?) can use a small bar area that has a selection of drinks (branded spirits, beer, soft drinks) and a running buffet containing salad items and warm pizza.
We used this a fair bit of the time, as we were generally too full to have a full meal.
Beware the melon though - during our stay there, we often saw the melon slices were covered in small flies.
Also, some people didn't use the serving tongs - preferring their fingers, so you have to try to be first to the pizza!
Beach
The beach has been mentioned in previous reviews. Our experience was pretty positive. It's small and cleaned daily by the staff.
It's location means that there are no waves - it is wonderful for small kids.
Since the hurricance, it's changed slightly, due to the currents in the bay, but this has been for the better.
We saw only clear blue sea, NOT the horrible mess that some people have described.
On windy days, you might get deposits of seaweed, but the hotel staff come along and bag it all up.
There are free kayaks, a daily kayak tour and free goggles for the snorkellers.
In additioin, you can rent jet skis too and you're not limited to a defined circuit - you can go anywhere in your 30 minutes allotted time. It costs $45US per half hour.
Pool
There is a large pool area with many sun loungers to use at your leaisure - IF you can beat the inevitable towel-placers who I witnessed rising at 6:30a.m. to reserve their chairs for the day.
There were no Germans - these were greedy, selfish Brits in the main and almost always women.
By 7:30, there wasn't a south-facing chair left. All had towels placed on them, every single day - even when there was early morning rain.
We didn't use them, because we couldn't be bothered with the race. The strange thing was, that even though they had the towels on them, most of the loungers were not used until 10:30.
During the evening, there is usually some kind of entertainment around the pool, when the hotel lets in local traders who set up shop with their various trinkets.
The prices are high and inflated to allow for "negotiation".
Just like the endless stream of beach sellers that pester you each day, they expect about 50% of the asking price - but check prices at the hotel shop - they are cheaper for certain items!
Timeshare
There is no avoiding the timeshare touts in Cancun. They are everywhere - from the airport (NO, they are NOT porters) to the shopping centres to the hotel itself.
We had a card placed under our door on the first night, suggesting that we had missed their welcome meeting, where we could get our special guest benefits pack.
Luckily, our Cosmos rep (the excellent Mario Foster) warned us about the practice, so we ignored the card. The people in the lobby area are there to sell property and timeshare (or at least get the viewings) and are not employed by the hotel.
TRIPS
Several trips are available from the hotel and around Cancun and just about everyone you meet will try and sell you one.
We went independently to Xcaret and had a great day out. It's worth seeing and experincing.
We didn't go to Chichenitza because you can't climb the monuments any more and some guests told our kids that it was boring - so they wouldn't go.
We did an Aquaworld submarine and snorkelling trip - where you go on a glass bottomed boat and see the coral.
Be warned. 50% of the people on this trip were VERY sea sick after going on the sub-see. It rocks from side to side (inevitably) and is extremely claustrophobic. The windows provide a magnifying effect that plays havoc with your senses.
3 of our party were sick. Many others were too, which spoils the day a bit.
The second part of the trip involves being dropped off onto another boat where you're taken snorkelling on the coral - which is great. We saw sea turtles and barracudas among other things.
The guides pay a lot of attention to you if you are a single female and none if you are male!
There is beer and soft drinks in abundance and there doesn't seem to be much of a time limit, though we had to return due to my wife's and son's sickness from the sub-see.
This trip was called "Paradise Island", so we expected an island. There wasn't one. It was all boat borne, but at the end, there was plenty of food - generally burgers and fries, but plenty of it.
Warning - they hold a tips box out at every opportunity - we counted 5 times - once on the outboard trip on the boat, once on the sub-see, again on the snorkelling boat, on the trip back and again at the buffet.
In summary, the experience of the Barcelo Costa was positive. Plus points were the staff, who were very attentive, paticularly the bar staff. The rooms were clean and cleaned daily. There was a good atmosphere around the place.
On the negative side, the a la carte restaurants where the food was just not up to standard.
Would we return? We enjoyed our stay, but there are better looking hotels in better locations to be honest.

We stayed at the barchelo costa cancun nov- dec 2006.formerly the Gran Costa Real.Check in was very smooth, hotel itself of a very high standard.Hotel grounds are also very nice.
Our room was huge ,massive shower-bathroom and a very large balcony with a hammock. We also had sea and pool view so we were very happy .Mini bar restocked everyday with water, coke ,sprite and beer.Rooms very clean and decor nice.Room cleaned daily ,towels changed daily, gave maid a $1 a day.Food was also very good ,buffet above average, 3 al a cartes ,mexican ,spanish and itailian, all exellent but smallish portions. There is a 24 hour snack bar with self service food ,the usual ,and tea, coffee and beers and spirits.Hotel staff in all areas very friendly and helpful, gave tips couple of times a day , they deserve it.My only complaint is the entertainment in the evening was diabolical, same duo singing the same songs almost every night ,with two teenagers with us there was nothing for teens,no teen discos etc,no nightclub on sight.Beach is small but very clean and well maintained ,plenty of loungers .There is also a bar on the BEACH ,which is exellent. You can also go to the sister hotel THE HOTEL TUCANCUN and use all their facilites. The beach there is fantastic, powder white sand and crystal clear water. The best way to get aroud is the bus ,very cheap 35p no matter where you get no or off.Taxis are expensive but you can haggle , just make sure you set your price before you set off.CANCUN itself fantastic ,very safe ,ive been three times but not with kids so we did some excursions with them.
Please Would not recommend EXCURSIONS OFF REP AT WELCOME MEETING ,TOTAL RIP OFF.THOMAS COOK wanted $88 pp for xel ha , we got exactly the same deal for $65 at a shopping mall.THOMAS COOK wanted $55 pp for the JUNGLE TOUR ,we paid $28 pp with insurance .Both of the above fantastic. There is also WET N WILD water park, great fun.DOLPHINS is a must.Nightlife is very varied ,someting for eveyone and all budgets, from clubs to shows, bars galore. You have to go to COCO BONGO out of this world.PAT OBRIANS is good fun.Plenty of restaraunts for all tastes and budgets. We went to PLANET HOLLYWOOD, HARD ROCK CAFE ,RAINFOREST CAFEP all very good.WE ALSO WE ALSO HAD A REAL MEXICAN downtown. Plenty of shopping malls.
All in all had a fantastic holiday .Once youve been you WILL go back.

Firstly, let me just say that this is the first time i have felt the need to write a review on any holiday we have taken. Cancun itself is a brilliant place to holiday for ALL ages. However, avoid the barcelo las perlas at all costs, unless your between 18 & 25 or a complete alcoholic. Quite how Direct holidays can say its suitable for families is unbelievable.
The pool area is a complete NO-GO area for anyone with children or any sense of well being. At daytime the pool is full of gangs of drunken youths, singing, swearing, drinking & doing just about anything they wanted without recrimination from hotel staff or reps. The music played around the pool during the day was so loud it could be heard from the other end of the beach. At night, the pool bar was used until it closed at midnight just as a starting place to get completely paralytic before moving onto a club. The atmosphere around this area often became violent i.e. on 1 occasion a table & chairs were thrown off a 3rd floor balcony onto the area around the bar after 1 argument.
There is absolutely nothing for children & they are pretty much ignored by staff as they cannot give tips. You will not get anything done at this hotel unless you are prepared to tip someone to do it. The beach however, was nice & became something of a sanctuary for 'normal' people, Although if you didnt get up to get a sunbed by 5.30am you were on the sand, which we found almost impossible as this was about the time we were eventually getting to sleep, after being kept awake by the returning yobs, who preffered to take drugs & carry out sexual acts in the walkways instead of their rooms. We spent most of our nights during the second week going into the hotel zone, where the entertainment, bars & restaraunts were excellent.
Places to go:_
COCO BONGO - childrens show on a thursday was brilliant.
RAINFOREST CAFE- superb food & service
CARLOS & CHARLIES - great fun for everyone & good food.
XCARET- is a must
Dolphin discovery - worth every penny.
PLACES TO AVOID:_
Barcelo Las Perlas - Don't waste your money. make sure you book a hotel in the hotel zone & not towards downtown Cancun.
Hope this helps anyone who has children or has any sense of decency.

Having just come back from the Barcelo Club Las Perlas, I would like to offer my thoughts on the accomodation. After reading the previous entries on this hotel i was quite dubious but then you have to realise that one persons idea of heaven could be another persons idea of hell. So only you can be the
